Ampersand (2011)

Named after the typesetter’s symbol for “and,” Ampersand is inspired by stories of unusual connection and intersection. Tangle’s 2011 Philadelphia Fringe Festival debut, Ampersand, combines traditional circus arts– trapeze, aerial rope, and partner acrobatics– with powerful narratives of identity, memory, and belonging. Using acrobatic dance and aerial theatrics, we explore the story of several ordinary lives in Philadelphia. The members of Tangle use extraordinary movements of the body to reflect normal experiences like walking down a crowded street, waking up and getting ready for work, or meeting a stranger in a bar. The result is a fascinating blend of the familiar and the surprising. (Photo by Michael Ermilio.)
